Google has had “personalized search” for years. – http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2005/06/search-gets-personal.html – The idea being that what I search for, helps Google understand me and make my future searches for relevant.

For example, if I love music and search for “bass” I will get bass guitars, etc.

If you love fishing, and search “bass” you will bass fish results.

Even though we both searched the same thing.

I’ve seen two people do the exact same search, using the same terms, and getting completely different results. Why? Because your friends now influence results. Having a large social network is important, because search engines are now bringing their influence into the results.
